Connor, Hunter, Garth
To make a decent survival experience, we set several rules for this camp. It was designed to be a day hike gone wrong so everyone was allowed to bring a few snacks and enough water for a 5 mile hike but not much else. Tarps and sleeping were also recommended. No tents, matches, or lighters. Everyone had some form of survival kit with items ranging from flint & steel, knife, fishing line, hooks, whistles, mirrors, water purification tablets, 9V batteries, magnifying glass, string, compass, and flashlight. After zigzagging through the forest for a while, the scouts used a map and compass to pinpoint our location and come up with a plan to get out. By that time it was getting late so we had to set up a simple camp.
how to transport a victim with an ankle sprain
Connor slept (or you might say he spent the night shivering) in his tarp shelter with no sleeping bag.
Connor and Hunter used flint and steel to light the campfire
Everyone helped Garth built this lean-to shelter out of dead sticks and logs
Hunter made a nice A-frame tent with his tarp
In the morning we hiked out a few miles and found worms on the way.
Made fishing poles out of sticks
And exchanged the worms for a little cutthroat
Gutted and...
cooked the fish...
served along with potato/jerky/dandelion stew which made for a decent meal after almost 20 hours.
